Intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills one possesses. Intelligent people are highly adaptable to change, which allows them to to thrive in different settings. They adapt by showing what can be done regardless of the complications or restrictions placed upon them. A recent psychological research supports the idea that intelligence depends on being able to change your own behaviors in order to cope more effectively with your environment, or make changes to the environment you’re in. Studies show that intelligent people are higher than their IQ and are less concerned about everyday things such as keeping their room tidy or going to bed on time.
1. Intelligent people use more curse words than others.
Yes, it’s true. Intelligent people swear a lot more than others. A recent study shows that people who swear have a high vocabulary rate and fluency. The study was done to either verify or debunk the myth that people who swear have low vocabulary rates and fluency. The result of the study, however, showed that people who could name the most swear words within a minute tend to score higher on an IQ test. So, in conclusion, a rich vocabulary of swear words is a sign of rhetorical strength rather than the attempt to hide verbal deficits.
2. They are night owls.
Are you someone who likes to stay up late? This is a sign of intelligence. An analysis of a large representative sample of young Americans confirms that intelligent children grow up to be more nocturnal as adults than less intelligent children. Intelligent individuals also go to bed later on weeknights and wake up later on weekdays. The study also included children with different levels of IQ and concluded that those with a childhood IQ of less than 75 (“very dull”) go to bed around 11:41 PM whereas those with a childhood IQ of over 125 go to bed around 12:29. President Obama, Charles Darwin, Winston Churchill, Keith Richards and Elvis Presley are all famous for nocturnal activities.
3. They have high self-control.
Intelligent people are able to overcome impulsiveness by “planning, clarifying goals, exploring alternative strategies and considering consequences before they begin”. In 2009, a study was conducted on 103 healthy adults. The participants were asked to choose between two financial rewards: a smaller payout immediately or a larger payout at a later date. The study found out that participants who chose the larger payout at a later date had high IQ as well as self control. Scientists that conducted the study explain that the anterior prefrontal cortex plays a major role in helping people solve tough problems and demonstrate self-control.
4. Their workspace or room is usually cluttered.
By now you know exactly why you swear a lot and stay up late. Apart from these two traits, there’s one more; leaving behind a bit of mess. A study by the University of Minnesota suggests that messy desks are actually a sign of intelligence. The clutter or mess is formed because the person’s mind is preoccupied with more important things. The study also showed that the messy environment led to a more creative workflow.
Intelligent people act, solve issues and think differently. They ignore everyday problems such as trying to act civil, keeping things clean and maintaining a consistent schedule. So, they have the freedom to be more creative and be more efficient. All in all, an intelligent person swears like a sailor, spends nights at messy desks and makes creative ideas a reality.
